CIDR insertion steps for goats and sheep

• Purpose: Use CIDRs to synchronize estrus as part of your AI breeding schedule.
• Hygiene: Wash the tail/perineal area with soap and water; dry with a clean towel.
• PPE: Wear clean, disposable gloves (recommended for anyone handling CIDRs).
• Load applicator: Place the CIDR in its applicator per manufacturer instructions.
• Lubricate: Apply a generous, sterile, animal-safe lubricant to the applicator tip.
• Insert angle: Lift the tail and insert the applicator at about a 30° angle, advancing gently until seated.
• Deploy: Release the CIDR per the applicator’s mechanism and withdraw smoothly.
• Check: Ensure the retrieval tail is visible and trim only if needed to avoid interference.
• Aftercare: Monitor for discomfort, discharge, or premature loss; keep animals in clean, low-stress conditions.
• Disposal: Use a sealed container for used gloves and packaging; follow label guidance for spent CIDRs.

Tip: “CIDR” = Controlled Internal Drug Release device. Always follow the product label and your veterinarian’s protocol for timing, insertion duration, and withdrawal before AI.
